“The Internet as an Information Resource”.  No need anymore to use the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Yellow Pages to find information!  Brian Riley presented a great talk on what one can find on the Internet, and how it has impacted what we do.

“Nominations and Elections!”  The Nominating Committee seeks candidates for the March 2013 election of NNCUG Officers.  If you are interested in running for a NNCUG Officer position, or wish to nominate a candidate, please read!  Note that elections for NNCUG Officers will be held at the March 15 Membership Meeting!

“Farewell From the Editor”.  Yes, Bruce Mc Millan is resigning as the Computer Link editor after four years.  He will help a new editor if one is appointed by the Board, and will serve as a back up if needed.

“March Photo SIG Meeting”.  The SIG will meet on March 11 at the LCL.  Marilyn Jurrkops will demonstrate the “paint bucket” function on Photoshop Elements to enhance colors in a photograph.  Bring your own laptop and photos to practice with Marilyn.

“Genealogy SIG Meeting”.  This SIG will meet on March 13 to focus on finding ancestors using the U.S. Fedeal Census of Population data.  Participants will then break into groups to discuss individual family history software titles or a basic group addressing the needs of beginning genealogists.

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on March 18, at the Lancaster Community Library (LCL) where participants will explore travel research apps and tools. Plan your trip before you go.

“Nominations and Elections!”.  This is the annual NNCUG business meeting at which elections for Officers, 2014-15, are held.  No nominations for the position of Vice President have been received.  Nominations for all positions will be accepted from the floor.  A quorum is needed – please plan to attend and vote!

“TED”.  BJ McMillan will explore “TED” – Technology, Entertainment, and Design talks from “a non-profit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading”.

“Adobe Creative Cloud”.  Last chance to subscribe to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for a special introductory rate of $10 a month for the next year.  Yes, this is a new business model from Adobe – read about it.

“The NNCUG Needs YOU!”.  This article by the BOARD starts the discussion with the members of the NNCUG about the need to fill leadership positions (including the Computer Link Editor).  Membership input is also requested on ways to reverse the declining membership of the NNCUG and to bring the Group into alignment with the changing realities of the computing world.  Members are strongly encouraged to go to the NNCUG web site and participate in the discussion of these topics.!

“NNCUG Future Discusssion and Internet as an Information Resourrce”.  The Membership Meeting on February 15 will be devoted to discussion of the results of member input to the issues raised in “The NNCUG Needs YOU!”.  In addition, Brian Riley will kick off a three part series on using the Internet as an information resource.

“Genealogy SIG Meeting”.  This SIG will meet on February 13 to focus on finding ancestors using the U.S. Fedeal Census of Population data.  Participants will then break into groups to discuss individual family history software titles or a basic group addressing the needs of beginning genealogists.

“February Photo SIG Meeting”.  The SIG will meet on February 11 at the LCL.  This meeting will be an “open meeting” where participants, particularly those who hung photos at the annual Photo SIG exhibit, will show and present an informal “Artist’s Statement” describing their work.  In addition, participants can discuss tools and techniques used in their work.

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on February 18, at the Lancaster Community Library (LCL) where participants will explore downloading apps and installing them on their devices.  Help will be available for registering Apple and Google gift cards to buy apps or other media from the Apple and Google stores.

“Goodby XP”.  This article is a fairwell to Windows XP that Microsoft will no longer support effective April 8, 2014.  Of course, this operating system will still work on April 9!.  Courses of action for users of the 35 percent of computers still with Win XP are prorvided.

“Storage Media, Interfaces, and Backups”.  Rob Mink, President of the NNCUG, presented a talk on types of storage media available for backup, information on computer interfaces, and strategies for backing up data.  Rob noted that punch cards are considered to be an obsolete form of data storage!

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on January 21, at the Lancaster Community Library (LCL) to explore basics for using tablets that people may have received as a holiday gift.

“January Photo SIG Meeting”.  The SIG will meet on January 14 at the LCL.  This meeting will be devoted to learning how to cut photo mats.  Bring your photos, tools and materials to join in, or share with others.  This meeting will support the SIG in preparation for its February show at the LCL.  Bring your laptop to follow along.  Also bring photos that you wish to share with the group.

“Get Plain Text”.  Read about a simple to use free program called Get Plain Text.  As its name implies, it will strip all formating from text copied from a web page.  Easy to use.

“Internet as an Information Resource”.  Brian Riley will speak at the January 18 Membership Meeting on using the Internet as an Information Resource.  This is the first of a three part series.  Yes, the Yellow Pages are no longer king!!

“Holiday Gadgets and Gifts”.  Brian Riley, Vice-President of the NNCUG, presented his take on holiday gifts to give and get.  Noteworthy is the Yodeling Christmas Pickle!  He was joined by NNCUG members demonstrating their ideas for gifts.

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on December 17, at the Lancaster Community Library (LCL) to explore music on tablets.

“December Photo SIG Meeting”.  The SIG will meet on December 10 at the LCL to explore using Adobe Photoshop Elements post processing to change lighting, such as brightness and contrast, in digital photos.  Bring your laptop to follow along.  Also bring photos that you wish to share with the group.

“Newsletter – Pre-Print to Post-Print”.  Bruce Mc Millan, Editor of the NNCUG Computer Link newsletter presented all aspects of developing this newsletter.  He also demonstrated the use of Microsoft Publisher, a major tool that he uses to edit the newsletter.  Bruce also noted that the NNCUG will need a new editor, effective March 1, 2014.

“Windows XP’s Swan Song – Time is Running Out!”.  Windows XP still is found on 37 percent of the world’s desktops, and Microsoft will discontinue support for this operating system on April 8, 2014.  Plan ahead for what you want to do, and do not get trapped at the last minute into taking hasty action.

“November Photo SIG Meeting”.  The SIG will meet on November 12 at the Lancaster Community Library (LCL) to further explore Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Bring your laptop to follow along.  Also bring photos that you wish to share with the group.

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on November 19, at the LCL to discuss the Apple iTunes University.  Please explore this, and be prepared to demonstrate or talk about your favorite topic that you found.

“Genealogy SIG Meeting”.  This  SIG will meet on November 14, at RW-C.  The topic is

Genealogy and Your Computer – How and Where To Start Your Family History.  The program will cover:  Setting goals for your research; organizing the information you have; and selecting a family history software program.

“Membership Meeting – Gadgets you want to Share”.  The Membership Meeting will be held on November 16 at RW-C.  Bring your favorite gadgets to share with the audience to give them holiday gift ideas (for themselves or others).

“Backups and Disk Cloning”.  Brian Riley discussed computer backups and cloning of hard drives.  Cloning is a neat way to be prepared to get your computer running again after a virus attack or hard disk failure.

“Windows Office Suite Software”.  Rob Mink discussed paid and freeware computer Office suites at the August 17, Membership Meeting.  Good to know that there are decent money saving alternatives!

“September Genealogy SIG Meeting”.  Jim Bartlett will discuss DNA tools and testing for genealogy research at the September 12th meeting.  The meeting is free, but registration is required for this meeting.

“Freeware”.  One person’s favorable review of the free software movement.

“Tablet SIG”.  The SIG will meet on September 17, at the Lancaster Community Library to discuss moving photos from a tablet to a computer and vice versa.

“Computer Backups”.  Guest speaker for the September 21 Membership Meeting will be Brian Riley.  He will discuss computer backups.  This is essential for the well being of your computer and its data!

“Telecommunications Srevices From METROCAST”.  Jennifer Nash from Metrocast was our July Membership Meeting speaker.  She discussed the status of Metrocast’s wiring of Northumberland County for high speed Internet service and answered a wide range of Internet service related questions from the audience.  It will be soon!

 “APCUG” Photo/Newsletter/Website Contests NOW OPEN”.  Entry rules are at the APCUG web site.  The closing date for receipt of entries is August 26, 2013.

“Software Office Suites”.  Rob Mink will be discussing paid and freeware computer Office suites at the August 17, Memberrship Meeting.

“What Are File Types?”.  Have you ever tried to open a file on your computer and it wouldn’t do so?  If so, this primer on file types and extensions may be of interest!
